1. Defoamer is insoluble or insoluble in foaming solution

For defoamers used in water systems, the molecules of the active ingredient must be strong hydrophobic and weak hydrophilic, with an HLB value in the range of 1.5-3 for the best effect.


2. The surface tension of defoamers is lower than that of foaming liquids

Only when the intermolecular force of defoamers is small and the surface tension is lower than that of the foaming solution, can defoamer particles immerse and expand on the foam film. It is worth noting that the surface tension of the foaming solution is not the surface tension of the solution, but the surface tension of the co foaming solution.


3. Defoamer have a certain degree of affinity with foaming solution

Since the defoaming process is actually a competition between the foam collapse speed and the foam generation speed, the defoamer must be able to disperse rapidly in the foaming liquid so that it can quickly play a role in a wider range of foaming liquid. To make defoamers diffuse quickly, the active ingredients of defoamers must have a certain degree of affinity with the foaming solution. The active ingredients of defoamers are too close to the foaming solution and will dissolve; Too sparse and difficult to disperse. Only when close and distant are appropriate, can the effectiveness be good.


4. No chemical reaction occurs between defoamer and foaming solution

The defoamer reacts with the foaming solution, causing the defoamer to lose its effectiveness and potentially producing harmful substances that affect the growth of microorganisms.


5. Defoamer have low volatility and long action time

Firstly, it is necessary to determine the system that requires the use of defoamers, whether it is water-based or oil-based. In the fermentation industry, oil-based defoamers such as polyether modified silicon or polyether based ones should be used. The water-based coating industry requires water-based defoamer and organosilicon defoamers.
