What are the types of defoamers? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
The types of defoamer
In the coating, textile, medicine, food, paper, water treatment, petrochemical and other fields, defoamer can effectively eliminate the foam generated in the liquid, thereby enhancing product quality. There are many types of defoamer, according to different classification methods can be divided into different types.
Defoamer antifoam can be divided into five categories according to the form of solid particles defoamer, emulsion defoamer, dispersion defoamer, oil defoamer and cream defoamer antifoam.
Defoamer antifoam according to the application area classification according to defoamer in different industrial production can be divided into coating industry defoamer, paper industry defoamer, textile industry defoamer, food industry defoamer antifoam and oil industry defoamer antifoam.
Defoamer antifoam according to the composition of the classification of
non-silicon type defoamer antifoam: mainly amide defoamer antifoam, phosphate ester defoamer antifoam, carboxylate defoamer antifoam, low-grade alcohol defoamer antifoam, mineral oil defoamer antifoam, etc. Commonly used single amide, double amide defoamer and double amide defoamer. Commonly used single amide, double amide, etc., in addition to other nitrogen-containing compounds such as trialkyl melamine, cyanuronyl chloride melamine, fatty amines. Phosphate esters package defoamer antifoam including mono-alkyl, di-alkyl phosphate esters and fluorinated alkyl phosphate esters, etc., commonly used in paint wash products defoaming. Fatty acids (such as lauric acid, palmitic acid, etc.), fatty acid esters (such as fatty acid glycerides, animal and vegetable oils, etc.), fatty acid soaps (such as stearic acid and palmitic acid calcium, aluminum, magnesium soaps), fatty alcohols / ethers (including straight-chain and branched-chain alcohols / ethers).
Polyether-type defoamer antifoam: mainly including straight-chain polyether, polyether with alcohol or ammonia as the initiator, and end-group esterified polyether derivatives, mainly using its solubility at different temperatures to show different characteristics, so as to achieve the antifoaming effect. At low temperature, the polyether is dispersed into water, and when the temperature rises, the hydrophilicity of the polyether gradually decreases until the turbidity point, so that the polyether becomes insoluble, thus playing the role of antifoaming. In the preparation process, by adjusting the type of polyether and the proportion of raw materials, you can change its cloud point, so that it can be used in different industries.
Silicone-type defoamer antifoam: polydimethylsiloxane (also known as silicone oil) is the main component of silicone-type antifoam agent. Compared with water or common oils, silicone oils have a lower surface tension and are suitable for both water-based foaming systems and oil-based foaming systems. In water or common oils, silicone oil has high activity, low solubility, chemical stability, wide range of use, low volatility, non-toxicity and other characteristics, and antifoaming ability is more prominent.
Analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of different types of defoamers
According to the composition of the different types of defoamers have their own advantages and disadvantages, specifically the following.
Non-silicon type defoamer antifoam
Most of the non-silicon type defoamer antifoam research and application are earlier, belonging to the first generation of defoamer, which has the advantages of easy to obtain raw materials, high environmental performance, low production cost. The disadvantages are low defoaming efficiency, specialization, harsh conditions of use and so on.
Polyether defoamer antifoam
Polyether defoamer antifoam belongs to the second generation of antifoam agent, its biggest advantage lies in the strong ability of foam inhibition; in addition, there are some polyether antifoam agents with high temperature resistance, resistance to strong acids and alkalis and other excellent performance. Disadvantages include: temperature restrictions on the use of conditions, the use of narrow areas, poor defoaming ability, low rate of bubble bursting.
Organosilicon defoamer antifoam
Organosilicon defoamer antifoam has strong antifoaming performance, fast bubble breaking ability, also has low volatility, relatively non-toxic to the environment, no physiological inertia, wide range of advantages, so it has a broad application prospects and huge market potential, but its foam inhibition performance is poor.Polyether modified organosilicon type defoamer antifoam
This kind of defoamer antifoam has the advantages of both polyether antifoam agent and organosilicon antifoam agent, which is the popular development direction of antifoam agent, and it can also be reused according to its reverse solubility. However, there are fewer types of these defoamers, and they are still in the research and development stage, and the production cost is higher.
